Instead of having formal recruitment in the fall, Cornell chose to hold formal recruitment in the spring semester/January. Deferred recruitment activities for incoming spring freshmen are held off until incoming freshmen have an entire first term at Cornell to focus on building solid and positive academic habits and adjust to college life. We think it is best for this cohort of new students to wait until their second semester at Cornell to be eligible to join a fraternity or sorority. Deferred recruitment for new students was instituted by student and faculty leadership in the 1950s and will continue to be Cornell’s policy.
